Desmesura (literally meaning disproportion or excess) is a play inside a play.
The first act portrays a brutal and passionate encounter between a young homosexual writer and his cold painter boyfriend as he struggles to finish a semi- autobiographical play about lesbian women. The second depicts the now almost finished play, and like a game of Russian babushka dolls- one inside the other- fiction and reality mix, as lines and ideas from the first act invade the intense scene, which shows a tangled web of love between a lesbian couple and one of the women’s ex-girlfriend. The awkward situation is interrupted with an appearance by the author (playing himself and leading his dog) and a three-way phone call with his nagging mother and a now-repentant boyfriend.
Desmesura is a Spanish play that opened in Madrid in 2009. This Argentine adaptation continues to be a brutally intense vision and criticism of love in modern times but has moments of hysterical comedy. This comedy contrasts the intensity of the encounter between the boyfriends, the awkward romantic situation of the three lesbian women, and the bleak honesty of the principal character’s desperate bid to hold his relationship together and find a ‘true’ balance between life and art as he finishes his play. Although incredibly intense and with a shocking end for one of the girls, the work is a tribute to love. The message- clear and positive- is that love, no matter how strained or controversial, is there to be embraced before it’s too late.
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this play and was blown away by the professionalism and quality of each of the cast member’s performances and I highly recommend anyone to go and see it (I would see it again so ask me if you can’t find a mate to go with!). Be warned that the play is in Spanish and the dialogue fast-paced and colloquial, so if you do not understand it all please don’t come asking me for your money back…

El primer acto enmarca un brutal y apasionado encuentro entre una pareja joven de homosexuales. Uno de ellos escritor y el otro, un pintor de carácter frío y distante. El escritor se encuentra con la difícil tarea de terminar su obra acerca de un trío de lesbianas.
En el segundo acto, vemos la obra casi finalizada de estas tres chicas.
Como una muñeca rusa, la obra se irá abriendo en diferentes capas y la ficción se mezclará con la realidad. Ideas y diálogos del primer acto invaden la intensa escena en la cual como en una telaraña , una pareja de lesbianas y un amor del pasado se encuentran y vinculan. Esta situación de gran tensión es interrumpida por la aparición del autor (encarnado en su papel y acompañado por su perro) quien sostiene una conversación telefónica con su insistente madre y su novio.
Desmesura fue estrenada en Madrid en el 2009. La adaptación Argentina continua siendo una brutal e intensa visión y crítica del amor en tiempos modernos. Aunque es acompañada por momentos de gran comicidad. Esta comedia contrasta con la intensidad del encuentro entre los novios, la incomodidad evidente en el romance del trío en el cual participan las chicas y la honestidad a carne viva del personaje principal quien no quiere dejar que su relación se quiebre y por sobre todo, encontrar el balance entre la vida y el arte. Aunque es increíblemente intensa y con un final bastante abrumador para una de las chicas, esta obra es un tributo al amor. El mensaje, claro y positivo, es que: el amor, no importa cuan controversial y doloroso, está presente para poder vivirlo y abrazarlo antes de que sea demasiado tarde.
Disfruté de la obra de principio a fin. Y me deslumbró el profesionalismo y la calidad de las actuaciones de cada actor. Recomiendo a cada uno de ustedes que vaya a verla. (la vería nuevamente , así que no duden en llamarme para acompañarlos)
